Dogue de Bordeaux - an old French breed – is the only Mastiff of French origin. His ancestors were possibly Italian Molossers, Spanish Mastiff, and others. In the Middle Ages, this breed was used as hunting and fighting dogs. In the eighteenth century Buffon describes it under the name of Dogue de Aquitaine.

For a long time Dogue de Bordeaux was called "butcher dog", as butchers often used it to protect their homes. Due to the Asian roots of this breed it is also called the "Turkish dog". The power, strength and huge size of Dogue de Bordeaux already make this dog an excellent guard and watchdog, even if it takes no action. Indeed, throughout its history French mastiffs were outstanding guards, hunters and fighters.

Large:

  17-27 inch (43-68 cm)
• around the chest behind the front legs (red color on the picture):
  27-42 inch (68-105 cm)

Extra Large:

• around the neck of the dog (green color on the picture):
  24-33 inch (60-85 cm)
• around the chest behind the front legs (red color on the picture):
  32-50 inch (79-125 cm)
